From LAIKA, the studio behind Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, comes its most ambitious film yet. After her baby brother is abducted by a murder of crows, headstrong teenager Prue McKeel launches a rescue mission into the Impassable Wilderness, an enchanted forest hidden just beyond Portland, Oregon. With her loyal but hapless classmate Curtis at her side, Prue navigates a world of talking animals, bandits, and powerful figures driven by grief and ambition.

“I think I’ve just seen the most beautiful stop-motion film ever made.”

Directed by Travis Knight and based on the bestselling novel by Colin Meloy (lead singer of The Decemberists), illustrated by Carson Ellis, the film features an extraordinary voice cast: Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Richard E. Grant, and Tom Waits. Every frame was built by hand — the project was in the works for over 14 years — and Knight made it for exactly this kind of room: he designed it to be discovered in the dark, on a big screen, with a room full of fellow dreamers.

A note for families: this one’s for older kids and grown-ups. The film is largely about grief and the heavy cost of carrying it, and one review warns of multiple character deaths and at least one genuinely traumatic scene.
AnimationPT2H11MPG-132026-10-22USenPeyton Elizabeth Lee
